Paranoid Schizophrenia Disorder

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health disorder that can include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thoughts and speech, abnormal behavior, and more. These symptoms can make everyday functioning difficult and sometimes lead to the development of anxiety disorders, drug or alcohol abuse, and difficulties with work or family. Because schizophrenia involves a variety of symptoms that can vary from person to person in type and intensity, mental health experts have created four different categories with each category being identified by the presence or absence of certain symptoms.

Symptoms of Paranoid Schizophrenia

Schizophrenic symptoms are typically grouped into the following three categories: positive, negative, and cognitive. Positive symptoms are those that are abnormally present such as hearing or seeing things that do not exist. Negative symptoms are those that are abnormally absent. They may include trouble showing emotion, having a lack of interest in daily activities, and becoming socially withdrawn. Cognitive symptoms are those that reflect how a person learns and uses information. Individuals with these types of symptoms may find it difficult to organize their thoughts and make decisions.

Understanding Paranoid Schizophrenia

Paranoid schizophrenia is the most common form and it’s identified by symptoms of psychosis (such as delusions or hallucinations) without disorganized speech or behavior. Disorganized speech means doing things such as repeating words or even making up words. The word “paranoid” in paranoid schizophrenia originates from the predominance of hallucinations or delusions that can feel threatening and drive a person to do things they would not otherwise do. They may include feeling as though someone or something is out to get you or that you’re being controlled by an external force. Although many hallucinations and delusions may seem outrageous or absurd to others, for the person who is experiencing them, they are very real.

Causes of Paranoid Schizophrenia

Like other forms of schizophrenia, the exact cause of paranoid schizophrenia isn’t known. It’s thought to be influenced by a variety of biological, environmental, and genetic factors. For instance, schizophrenia has been known to run in families. However, even if a close relative has been diagnosed with the disorder, that doesn’t mean other family members will develop it. Other potential risk factors include childhood trauma, exposure to certain viruses before birth, and chemical imbalances in the brain.
