Seasonal Affective Disorder Treatment

Exclusively for Professional Men, Executives, Physicians, Surgeons, & Attorneys

Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD, affects approximately 10 million Americans every year. SAD is a type of Depressive Disorder that usually starts in the late fall and extends until the early spring. For many people, Seasonal Affective Disorder is triggered by shorter days and it can result in significant changes in mood and behavior.

If you find yourself with a case of the winter blues, you don’t have to just live with it until spring. Like other types of Depressive Disorders, people can benefit from seeking help for SAD from a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. At Blair Wellness Group Dr. Blair offers comprehensive Seasonal Affective Disorder treatment in Los Angeles to assist clients with finding relief from their symptoms so they can live a more fulfilling life all year-round.

Our Approach to Seasonal Affective Disorder Treatment Beyond Light Therapy

Seasonal Affective Disorder affects everyone differently, but it can pose the same types of complications as Major Depressive Disorder. Left untreated, SAD can lead to substance abuse, Eating Disorders, failure to follow through with responsibilities, and relationship issues, among other things.

One of the most common forms of SAD treatment is light treatment. It involves exposing a person to very bright light for 20 to 40 minutes a day to help compensate for the reduced exposure to light during the winter months. Although this treatment may provide some relief, it often isn’t enough to eliminate the symptoms and prevent them from coming back the following year. Psychotherapy is a better option for long-lasting, effective results.

At Blair Wellness Group, we provide Seasonal Affective Disorder treatment in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas to help you overcome the symptoms associated with it and show you how to prevent them from returning. We offer Concierge-style treatment services that allow greater flexibility for our clients including the option to direct-pay for services and schedule appointments seven days a week. Our confidential, compassionate approach means you can pursue treatment at your own pace without worrying about outside influences or opinions.

Risk Factors of Seasonal Affective Disorder

There are several risk factors that may increase your chance of getting Seasonal Affective Disorder. First, it is often more common in people who suffer from other forms of Depressive Disorders or Personality Disorders or who have a family history of Mental Health Disorders. Second, SAD tends to be more common in people who live in places where there is a decreased amount of sunlight during the winter. This is because research indicates that sunlight is involved in the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that helps to regulate mood. Although SAD can affect just about anyone, it is more common in women and young adults.

Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder

For many people, symptoms start out mild and become more severe as the season progresses. Although much less common, some people experience summer-pattern SAD where their depression symptoms only occur during the summer months.

SAD symptoms are similar to those associated with other forms of depression but may include some additional symptoms and they only usually last for a few months out of the year. The following is a list of some of the most common symptoms associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

  • Persistent feelings of depression most of the day and most days of the week
  • Low energy
  • Little interest in things that you once enjoyed
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia (oversleeping)
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in weight
  • Difficulty thinking or making decisions
  • Social withdrawal
