Postpartum Depression

Exclusively for Professional Men, Executives, Physicians, Surgeons, & Attorneys

Postpartum depression is a common condition new mothers face a few days or weeks after giving birth. New moms may start experiencing “baby blues” shortly after welcoming their new child, which include anxiety, mood swings, crying spells, or difficulty sleeping. But if these feelings do not subside after two weeks, it can be a sign of postpartum depression: a serious condition that can interfere with day-to-day life and the care of your child.

Postpartum depression is a common but serious mental illness new mothers experience during the late stages of pregnancy and in the first few weeks of their child’s life. Many women notice changes in their minds and bodies after pregnancy, and even though they may have strong feelings of excitement and joy, it is also possible to encounter what is known as the “baby blues.” This is a period after the child’s birth — anywhere from three to five days all the way up to two weeks — during which you may experience anxiety, mood swings, depression, irritability, crying spells, or difficulty sleeping. Postpartum depression, however, is when these feelings continue for longer than two weeks and develop into more severe feelings of hopelessness or emptiness.

Treatment for Postpartum Depression

It can be disorienting and emotionally difficult for new mothers to work through this type of depression and care for their child. Many new mothers may not tell their spouses, friends, or family about symptoms and may feel embarrassed, ashamed, or guilty about their depressive feelings when they are expected to be happy.

At Blair Wellness Group, we strive to provide new parents the best customized treatment and tools possible in order to take care of themselves and their child. If you notice yourself or your spouse experiencing common symptoms of “baby blues” or worsening symptoms of postpartum depression, do not hesitate to contact us to get in touch with licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Cassidy Blair. This is a serious mental illness many new mothers face and it should not be a normal part of early motherhood. With Dr. Cassidy Blair and the Blair Wellness Group team, we offer all struggling parents the support and guidance they need to work through their depression.

Signs or Symptoms of Postpartum Depression

It is normal for new mothers to experience symptoms similar to depression after bringing their baby home as a result of hormonal changes after pregnancy. But it is possible to mistake postpartum depression for “baby blues,” which can interfere with your ability to care for your child and accomplish daily tasks.

If any of these depression symptoms persist longer than two weeks, or it becomes harder to take care of your child, take it seriously and contact your doctor immediately:

    • Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, shame, guilt, or inadequacy

    • Feeling overwhelmed or like a bad mother

    • Excessive, reoccurring crying

    • Recurrent thoughts of hurting your baby or yourself

    • Lack of interest or difficulty bonding with your baby

    • Lack of energy or motivation

    • Eating or sleeping too little or too much

    • Having trouble focusing or making decisions

    • Losing interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy

    • Withdrawing from friends and family

    • Having headaches, aches and pains, or stomach problems that don’t go away

    • Depressed mood or severe mood swings

    • Feelings of shutting down or isolation (in fathers)

Signs or Symptoms of Postpartum Psychosis

It is also possible for new mothers to develop postpartum psychosis within the first two weeks of their baby’s delivery. This is a very rare but dangerous condition that can cause life-threatening thoughts or behavior. Seek immediate medical treatment if you notice any of these symptoms:

    • Excessive confusion and disorientation

    • Obsessive thoughts about your baby

    • Seeing or hearing things that aren’t there

    • Excessive energy and agitation

    • Paranoia

    • Attempts to harm yourself or your baby

    • Rapid mood swings within several minutes

    • Behaving recklessly or in an abnormal way

Risk Factors for Postpartum Depression

Several factors may cause certain women to be at higher risk of postpartum depression. External influences include marital stress, limited social support from friends and family, having difficulties during the pregnancy or the birthing process, or the recent loss of a loved one. New mothers who have difficulty breastfeeding, have a baby with special needs, or have drug and alcohol problems may also be more likely to experience this form of depression. Social pressure to be a good parent and to be happy or joyful about motherhood can also worsen the effects.

Biological factors can increase a woman’s risk as well, including a family or personal history of depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder. It is also possible for new fathers to experience this as well, particularly if they have a history of depression or are experiencing financial stress. This may manifest in the form of fathers cutting off communication with their spouse and isolating themselves.
