What Causes ADHD?
Like many mental health disorders, the exact cause of ADHD is hard to define. One of the likely factors in the development of ADHD includes genetics, as it has been found that ADHD tends to run in families. Another possible cause has been linked to environmental factors such as exposure to certain chemicals.
In the past, it has been suggested that ADHD may be linked to everything from eating too much sugar to playing too many video games. However, these assumptions are completely unfounded since ADHD is a brain-based behavioral disorder that is more likely to be influenced by genetic factors or the production of certain chemicals in the brain than bad habits during childhood.
Symptoms of Adult ADHD
ADHD symptoms are generally categorized into two categories, hyperactivity or impulsivity, and inattention. Because most people experience these symptoms occasionally, it can be difficult to determine if a person’s symptoms are attributed to ADHD, another mental health disorder, or are just part of normal behavior. Those who have had other psychological disorders ruled out and have symptoms that impair function at work or home will likely be diagnosed with ADHD.
Everyday tasks can be a challenge for adults with ADHD due to the presence of symptoms such as:
- Poor planning
- Impulsiveness
- Lack of focus
- Restlessness
- Poor time management skills
- Difficulty multitasking
- Frequent mood swings
- Fidgeting
- Excessive talking
Three Types of ADHD
There are three recognized types of ADHD, each one characterized by a specific set of behaviors a person is likely to exhibit.
Hyperactive/Impulsive ADHD
As the name implies, people with this type of ADHD are constantly active. They like to fidget with things and have difficulty sitting still. Their impulsive behavior may cause them to talk incessantly and interrupt others. They also struggle with self-control and often talk or act without thinking of the consequences.
Inattentive ADHD
Those with inattentive ADHD may have difficulties at work or school. That’s because they have trouble following instructions, prioritizing, or focusing on a single task. People with inattentive ADHD also have a hard time remembering details because they are easily distracted and take more time to process information.
Combined ADHD
Some people have symptoms that don’t predominantly fall into one category or another. In those cases, a combination of hyperactive/impulsive and inattentive symptoms are exhibited.

The Link Between ADHD and Other Mental Health Disorders
Mental health disorders often coexist with other similar conditions, thereby making it more difficult to cope and further complicating treatment. ADHD is no exception. Many people who are diagnosed with ADHD also struggle with anxiety disorders, mood disorders such as depression, and substance abuse. The interdependent nature of most mental health disorders makes it all the more critical to seek treatment before additional complications arise.
Treatment for Adult ADHD
You’ve likely heard that there’s a direct correlation between physical and mental health. When you take care of your physical body through proper diet, rest, and exercise, it can also have a positive impact on your physical wellbeing. Therefore, making healthy habits a priority is usually the first thing you can do to help cope with your symptoms.
Although focusing on physical health can certainly aid in mental health, it’s unlikely that you will be able to eliminate your symptoms altogether. That’s why, if your symptoms are continually disrupting your life, it’s important to seek help from a licensed psychologist.
Psychotherapy is an effective and key component of ADHD treatment. People with ADHD experience challenges in everyday life that can cause them to become pessimistic and self-critical. Cognitive Behavioral Treatment is a type of psychotherapy that is based on the idea that thoughts can affect the way people feel and behave. Therefore, CBT aims to change negative thought patterns and replace them with more positive ones that can help people better cope with any challenges they may face.

Most people think of ADHD as strictly a childhood disorder that will eventually go away. Unfortunately, research has shown this not to be true. Millions of adults struggle with adult ADHD every day. Compared to other mental health disorders, ADHD might seem to be less significant — something that is more of a nuisance than a true threat to health and happiness. On the contrary, adults with ADHD are at a higher risk for unemployment, addiction, relationship problems, and more.
At Blair Wellness Group, we specialize in treating a wide variety of behavioral conditions including adult ADHD. Don’t delay in getting the help you need — and deserve. Call our office today at 310.999.4996 to schedule an appointment for psychotherapy in Beverly Hills and learn effective ways to manage your symptoms.
