Solution-Focused Treatment

Exclusively for Professional Men, Executives, Physicians, Surgeons, & Attorneys

There are many different types of therapy, and similar to the tools in a toolbox, each one serves a different purpose. However, this is not to say that there is only one way to solve a problem. Each person has their own unique set of struggles and circumstances, and it is up to their Licensed Clinical Psychologist to help determine which type of therapy, or combination of therapy, will be most effective for them. Unlike many forms of therapy that focus on the minute details of how one’s past may have influenced the present, Solution-Focused Therapy—also known as Solution-Based Therapy—is more of an immediate, short-term approach that aims to find quick relief for various mental health challenges and relationship problems.

At Blair Wellness Group, our goal is to help each and every client find effective and long-lasting solutions to their problems so they can live a happy and more fulfilling life. For some people, Solution-Focused Therapy may not be the best approach, but for others, it’s a productive way to resolve or improve upon the things that they likely already know need to be changed. To learn more about our Solution-Focused Therapy in Los Angeles, or to find out if this is an effective treatment plan for you, please contact Blair Wellness Group to schedule an appointment.

Uses for Solution-Focused Therapy

Many traditional forms of psychotherapy aim to dig deep into someone’s past in order to help them identify the causes of present-day feelings and behaviors. However, many people are already aware of what they need to do to improve their lives, but sometimes guidance and coaching are needed to help them create a plan for how to accomplish it.One of the foundational beliefs of solution-focused therapy is that people have the skills necessary to initiate change in their lives, but they may need help developing them. This approach has been found to be beneficial for people struggling with mental health issues such as addiction and relationship problems, but it is not so effective for complex psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. During therapy sessions, the client and Licensed Clinical Psychologist work together to set goals in order to overcome a particular problem. In this regard, Solution-Focused Therapy can be very effective for addressing such problems as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, stress, self-esteem issues, interpersonal or family dysfunction

Benefits of Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy is a method that employs optimism and motivation to focus one’s attention on their own ability to make positive changes. That’s not to say that this abbreviated form of therapy works for everyone, but those for whom it does work are usually dealing with a specific issue or major life change. By pursuing Solution-Based Therapy with a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, you can address these issues in a productive and effective way, allowing you to find the best path forward for your life.

Short-Term

Many forms of psychotherapy require months of intense focus on one’s past history in an effort to understand how the past may have influenced present-day problems. This is a very effective and widely accepted approach to dealing with many mental health disorders, but it may not be necessary — or effective — for everyone. Some people benefit more from identifying an efficient path to alleviating symptoms or overcoming barriers to happiness.

Learn How to Set Goals

It’s easy to underestimate the value of goal-setting, but this skill is at the heart of solution-focused therapy. Identifying, setting, and road mapping meaningful goals is essential for success of all types. Athletes set goals to improve their performance, couples set financial goals to ensure a comfortable retirement, and people who struggle with life’s challenges can also set goals that will help to improve their mental health.

Build Confidence

Instead of dwelling on the past and things you cannot change, solution-focused therapy aims to help clients focus on their strengths and build confidence that they can use to overcome present-day issues. Creating a positive and nurturing environment where individuals feel empowered to find their own resolutions (instead of having someone tell them what they should do) can be highly effective for finding solutions for today, as well as for whatever may come in the future.

How Solution Focused Therapy Works

For some people, it can take weeks, months, and even years to identify the cause of a particular mental health issue. For others, they may already have a good understanding of the origin of their problems, and they just need an efficient way to resolve them. During solution-focused therapy, very little time is spent discussing the past, but instead, the majority of effort goes into finding ways to execute tangible solutions.  This results-based approach works on several key assumptions, such as:

    • Change is inevitable, so clients must learn to embrace it

    • Each person has the capability to solve their own problems

    • Clients are the experts in their own therapy and they must want to change

    • Focus on the future and not the past

Keeping these assumptions in mind, the client-psychologist relationship in Solution-Based Therapy is one that is more like that of a facilitator or coach who can assist someone in reaching their goals faster. Instead of fixating on the past, clients are reminded of their strengths, and focus is shifted to one that is more positive and solution-oriented. This enables individuals to set clear goals and develop plans that will lead to the life changes they so desire.
