Benefits of Psychodynamic Therapy
There are two main goals of psychodynamic therapy — to improve the patient’s self-awareness and to develop an understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs in relation to their past experiences. According to psychodynamic theory, behavior is influenced by unconscious thought. Therefore, the psychologist role is to help people recognize these repressed emotions and unconscious influences that may be affecting their current behavior. As a result, this insight can contribute to several positive outcomes.
Healthier Relationships
It is common to develop maladaptive defense mechanisms after unpleasant or painful past experiences. Unfortunately, when you consciously or even unconsciously rely on these methods to avoid potential conflict or painful emotions, it can make matters worse in how you connect with and respond to others. A psychodynamic therapist can help people improve their relationships by learning how to be emotionally available and voice their needs in a constructive way.
Better Understanding of Self and Others
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on the psychological roots of emotional suffering and maladjusted behaviors through self-examination and reflection. This can not only provide insight into the “why” behind your feelings and actions, but it can also help you understand the origins of interpersonal difficulties. Through in-depth personal analysis, patients can learn how to change the negative feelings and repressed emotions that are keeping them from engaging in healthy relationships and living their best life.
Improved Management of Problems and Difficulties
Everyone experiences problems and difficulties in their lives, but how you handle them can make all the difference when it comes to your health and happiness. Psychodynamic Therapy Treatment can help you tap into repressed emotions, confront distressing situations, and in turn, build strength and resilience.
Greater Control Over Actions
Sometimes people fall into the same self-defeating patterns that contribute to ongoing stress and difficulties. These patterns are often influenced by one’s relationship with his or her environment, as well as the unconscious emotions that guide behavior. With Psychodynamic Therapy, knowledge is power — or more specifically, it provides the missing link that explains why someone acts or feels the way they do. By understanding these drivers and influences, people can be more in control of their situation and make conscious choices that lead to positive change and desirable outcomes.
Freedom From the Past
Childhood and family experiences, as well as those involving close, personal relationships are key defining factors that form the foundation of a person’s psychological processes. By discussing these past conflicts and current struggles with a psychologist, patients can work toward resolving the repressed emotions that influence current mood and functioning. In doing so, even victims of abuse, trauma, or neglect can learn how to change automatic ways of thinking so they no longer have to be a prisoner of the past.

Psychodynamic Therapy Vs. Other Forms of Therapy
Psychodynamic Therapy works by helping people better understand some of the unconscious motivations that often influence how they think, feel, and act. This is accomplished by investigating the past in order to change the present. While this can prove to be effective for some people, it’s not the only form of psychotherapy that can prove to be beneficial. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy are two other treatment approaches that focus more on changing current thinking patterns and behaviors (instead of digging deep into the past) in order to address relationship problems and other mental health challenges.
Another point of difference between Psychodynamic Therapy and some other popular therapy is that it is usually a longer-term option aimed at not only addressing present symptoms, but developing the tools necessary to continuously improve future functioning. Other therapies such as CBT and IPT are often time-limited and involve a more structured approach. Although structured therapy may seem like the most efficient and effective way to achieve results, psychodynamic therapy works through free thought and the ability of the patient to discuss anything and everything that comes to mind. For some, and especially those who have been reluctant to assess their thoughts and emotions in the past, this approach can uncover a multitude of clues into the things that are holding them back and it may take more time to address all of them.
